Yoomi Feeding System: Review and Giveaway

REVIEW

Yoomi_box
Yvie checking out the Yoomi Feeding System

I was recently given the opportunity by AT Marketing & PR Consultancy to review the award winning Yoomi Feeding System. It is the first self-warming baby bottle that gently warms baby’s feed to the natural temperature of breast milk in just 60 seconds. Say what? 60 seconds?? No, don’t bluff! Really lah, 60 seconds only!

Any parent (or grandparents or nanny or… you get the idea lah) would have experienced at least once trying to warm a bottle of EBM (expressed breast milk) or premixed FM (formula milk) with a bowl of warm water (takes about 6 or so minutes) or with a microwave (takes about 3 or so minutes) AND trying to pacify your little wriggly bundle of screaming joy at the same time. You would also muttered to yourself in the middle of the dark, in the room while bouncing the little screaming fella or in the car on the road somewhere “faster heat up leh, I’m going deaf from the screaming!” So not funny man. 🙁 Mother of Xander also had nights like that until we were introduced to yoomi.

Yoomi_so hungry
So hungry she ate her sock 🙁

What is Yoomi? The technical details…

Yoomi Feeding System

*no-fuss latch on: thanks to its natural breast-shaped and super-soft silicone teat which allows for a breast-from-breast experience

*transition sorted: thanks to the consistent breast-milk temperature feed provided by yoomi, babies have a familiarity they need to support weaning from breast to bottle

*reduced likelihood of colic: with its 6 anti-colic vents (most bottles have 1-4) yoomi is one of the best vented bottles on the market

*easy pouring and mixing: yoomi’s unique, wide-necked bottle makes pouring and mixing simple – as well as clean and tidy!

* convenience, always: being suitable for both expressed breast-milk and formula, and ideal for combination or bottle feeding… yoomi supports all baby’s feeding needs

*comfy grip: the ergonomically designed bottle makes yoomi easy to grip and more comfortable to hold during longer feeds

*safe: the yoomi range is 100% BPA free and meets the highest safety standards feeding

*beautifully simple: using patented technology, the yoomi pod enables warmers to be recharged in the microwave in just 2 mins using a ‘heat-shake, heat-shake’ method

* all you need:  the yoomi bottle can be used on its own or with a yoomi warmer and all yoomi bottles, teats and warmers are interchangeable across the range

How to use the yoomi warmer?

There are 3 ways to charge the warmer.

  1. Charge warmer in the yoomi pod for about 2 minutes in the microwave (750-1200 watts) using the “heat shake, heat shake” method.
  2. Place the warmer in a pan of boiling water (or steam steriliser) and boil for no more than 30 minutes.
  3. Place your warmer in an electric steam steriliser (no pod required) for 25 minutes continuously.

After charging, the warmers will be ready for use at any time. You can also put it in the bottle filled with milk into the fridge for the next feed. As with all things rechargeable, the yoomi can be recharged for up to 150 times but this is just a conservative estimate.

How do you know the warmers are charged? There should be a rattling noise when you shake it.

Important to note: Once the warmers are charged, set them aside for 60 to 75 minutes to cool down before you push the button to activate it.

What happens when you don’t wait? If you press the button too soon you could permanently damage your yoomi warmer. We got excited and forgot to wait before activation so the warmer warped 🙁 Fortunately for us, the kind folks at yoomi Singapore very quickly replaced it for us so that we can try the entire process again properly for the purpose of this review. So malu… I blame The Husband for not reading the instructions properly! *points finger at him*

Yoomi_warped warmer
Over heated warmer 🙁

How to activate the warmer?

  1. To activate the warmer, just press the button and within 2 or 3 seconds, you will feel it warming up.
  2. Fill the yoomi bottle with the milk, assemble, turn it upside down and wait for 60 seconds before you feed the baby. Perfect temperature of 32-34ºC everytime!
Yoomi_pour and store
I had to transfer my EBM into the yoomi bottle.

Why so magical?

“yoomi’s clever integrated warmer is activated by simply pressing the button which causes the solution inside to generate heat. When the bottle is tipped and the baby starts feeding, the feed flows around the channels on the outside of the warmer which are cleverly designed so that the feed reaches breast milk temperature (32-34 degrees).” – Information taken off their press kit.

Yoomi_warmer

Phuwah! So clever leh! – says Mother of Xander and The Husband.

Verdict of the review

60 seconds to warm the milk at the right temperature every time is a definite winner in my books! However, I’m not a fan of the microwave method although it is the fastest of the 3 recommended charging methods. Boiling it was the easiest for me. After 25 minutes, take it out of the water and let it cool. So simple. No need to heat shake heat shake so troublesome. Boiling it not only charges the warmer, it also sterilizes it. One stone 2 birds!

Yvie loves to hold her milk bottles during feeding time and would often do it until the bottle was done. The yoomi bottle however was a little heavier than normal so after a while she got tired of holding it and it landed on her face a few times. I guess the weight can’t be helped since the warmer has to be inside.

I would definitely recommend the Yoomi Feeding System to all new parents! Buy at least 2 warmers for your night feeds please because each warmer is only meant for one time use and will need to be recharged before the next feed. Your babies and your ears will thank you.

Who will find this useful? (updated)

I was asked since this is only a one time use warmer, who will find it useful? Despite that, I think this will be a great (starter) gift for new mums doing confinement. Since they will be at home the entire month, it will be easy to clean and charge after every use. You might not want to use the yoomi for regular 2 hour feeds but for the odd occasions like night feeds when the nanny or the daddy can help mummy out.

Dr Lily’s All Natural Aloe Vera Gel: Review and Giveaway

Review

I don’t know about you, but when I was growing up, aloe vera was like the go-to plant for all sorts of problems:

Kena splattered by oil from frying chicken wings despite standing 2 metres away and holding up the wok cover? Grab an aloe vera leaf!

Longkang (Malay for drain) appeared from nowhere and swallowed you in thus causing scraped knees? Aloe vera!!

Fell asleep at the beach while listening to Jason Dovonan serenade you on your discman and you kenah very ugly and painful sunburns? *loud chants* ALOE! ALOE!

Such a versatile and underrated plant, this aloe vera. 🙂

I was introduced to Dr Lily’s All Natural® Aloe Vera Gel by a friend 2 years ago when I complained on my Facebook wall that Xander’s persistent eczema was bothering me. Although his rashes weren’t terrible, they just didn’t seem to go away. My friend said instead of relying on steroid creams constantly, why not give Dr Lily’s aloe vera gel a try because it is all natural and contains no harmful preservatives and chemicals. I bought a tube, tried it and the rashes went away quite quickly.

image
MUMMY! So itchy! *sobs*

Fast forward 2 years and a new baby later, the dreaded eczema problem popped up again. Poor Yvie inherited our sensitive skin gene and she will break out into rashes all over her face and body quite quickly whenever the weather is hot or when we carry her in the baby carrier a little too long. My friend reminded me “Oi! Use the Dr Lily’s aloe vera gel lah! Babies can use also!” Oh yah hor?

image
image
image

The aqueous, clear gel is very easy to apply and this is especially awesome when you have a very squirmy baby who wriggles away at any chance. Squeeze a good amount in the hand and slap it on the baby before she make a run for it. I could never do this with other skin care cream because they don’t spread as easily and I would often have more cream on the bed than on the baby. We would normally apply the gel on Yvie after her bath and I will apply the excess onto my embarrassingly ugly and dry elbows and knees. Don’t waste good stuff mah.

Child Label: Review and Giveaway

Review

For parents of school going kids, one of the 1st few things you do before you pack your child’s school bag is to label everything. Back when I was a kid, my dad would use the permanent marker and write my name and class details on everything and everywhere. He left nothing unmarked, even engraved my name on my beloved BMX bicycle and I hated it. Sure the bike really got stolen one day and because my name was engraved on it, the ‘new owner’ couldn’t continue to stake their claim on it, I still hated having my name so visible and everywhere. I didn’t need the whole world to know my name in (today’s equivalent of) CAPS and in 120 point font size. Very malu can?

Fast forward 30 years. I am now a parent and have to label everything Xander brings to school by any means possible. I even did the marker thing on his school bag and toothbrush. This was before I know of personalized stickers lah so I went old school lor. Write with marker, then use sticky tape over the name to make them last longer.

The different methods used over the years.

So we used markers, DIY labelling machine, cheapo charlie made in Malaysia neoprint-like name stickers and even print on plain paper and then use sticky tape to paste them on Xander’s school books. All cannot make it and so ugly. They are mostly not waterproof and they come off very easily. You tell me “Hey I can get 40 labels printed for $7 leh!” but they come off every time you wash the bottle and then you need to put a new one on. That’s a big waste of money and time to keep replacing them right? Trust me lah, I’ve used them before. Not worth it lah. You need better stickers lah.

Child Label

Child Label

Recently, we given the opportunity to review the Give Me Everything Pack from Child Label, a local company and baby of Mother Inc. I love stickers! Don’t know why, I just do. I have a drawer full of stickers but dunno what to do with them 😛 Sorry, I digress…

The Give Me Everything Pack included the following:

32 x Small Rectangle Sticker Labels
32 x Chinese Name Sticker Labels
28 x Circle Sticker Labels
20 x Rectangle Iron Ons
18 x Circle Iron Ons

What is so special about these stickers?

“We use only high quality vinyl stickers, which are waterproof, freezable, microwavable and scratch resistant, but vulnerable to constant attempts of side picking and peeling. To ensure the long life of your Child Labels, keep out of reach from itchy fingers.” – Child Label

Dinos Club
The really cute labels

What I liked about the stickers was the size. These are large and easy to read. The circle iron-ons are really nice too. I usually see rectangular ones and almost always in *blah* black and white. The ones from Child Label are fun, colourful and quirky. Clear winner in my books!

Xander wasted no time and started marking his territory.
The communications book needed a makeover.
A different coloured sticker for each controller.
Even the toothbrush kit for school was not spared.

Because it’s waterproof, I don’t have to reinforce the stickers with sticky tape anymore. I know they will stay on for as long as Xander doesn’t decide to pick on them.

The Child Label website

The homepage

The website is easy to navigate and instructions very easy to follow.

The products

Something different from the other sticker sites is that Child Label offers customers the option of Chinese characters on the stickers. For someone like me who even now doesn’t know how to write Xander’s Chinese name, this is a really great idea. Check out the Split English/Chinese Stickers, they are very cute!

For your kid’s next birthday, you could consider printing some Birthday Sticker Labels for the goodie bags. Easier than DIYing your own gift tags the night before, yah?

The product details
How to order

Ordering the stickers is pretty simple, just follow the on-screen instructions, key in the name you want to appear on the labels, choose your favourite design and the font. Then Add to Cart!

Childlabel_web05

You will be directed to your shopping cart where you should check your order details and quantity.

Childlabel_web07

Don’t forget to key in your Shipping and Billing addresses ah?

Conclusion

Overall, I like the design and quality of the labels. However, I hope they could consider combining both the English and Chinese names onto one label for their next set of designs. Then I don’t have to paste 2 stickers like we did with Xander’s little communications book. The teachers probably think Xander’s mummy is damn kiasu to paste 2 big stickers on the small book. Hahaha!

Want to try it out for yourself?

Especially for all readers of Mother of Xander!

Let’s go… shopping with Privikids! (Review + Giveaway + Promo)

Review

Most of us who have little boys will agree that it is very difficult to find decent, stylish clothes for them that are also affordable in Singapore. This is especially tough for ages between 5 to 7 years old who are no longer babies but not quite big boys either. What you normally see in the market for this age group are plastered with cheesy graphics, corny text or passé comic characters. You could always order online from overseas sites but the delivery time often take so long and I don’t like to wait.

Who are Privikids?

Privikids_webpage 01

Privikids is a new kids’ fashionand lifestyle blogshop run by a young stylish family who takes pride not only in the simple, stylish togs they sourced from overseas but also have big hearts for underprivileged children. How many retailers do you know would take the trouble to collect preloved (in good condition please) children clothes from you and personally deliver them to the charities of their choice, The Salvation Army as well as Movement of the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS)? Exactly, not many.

Privikids’ select line of hip clothes not only look good but also very kind to your budget. When I was given the opportunity to write a review about the Privikids’ fashion line, I didn’t know what to choose! Had to text The Husband “Oi! Which one nice ah? That one that one and that one very nice hor??” In the end, we managed to select some and here they are!

So Fashion!

Butterfly Print Shirt and Cargo Bermudas in Navy Green

The Butterfly Print Shirt matched with Cargo Bermudas in Navy Green are part of the new collection Privikids had brought in especially for the festive season. It is so light and comfortable, it is perfect for our insane Singapore climate and our always sweaty boy.

Parrot Print T-shirt

Then The Husband spotted the Parrot Print T-shirt and told me we simply MUST have the t-shirt. I was skeptical. Got birds and flowers leh, Xan will like meh? You sure he won’t say “I dowan! Dis one for girl!” The Husband was very confident that Xander would love the parrot print and he was right. No need to convince the little one to try it on at all. Look at Xander! This boy ah, cannot sit still one. Lucky the t-shirt is as stretchable as the wild monkey child.

Rwar! T-shirt and Straight Cut Pants in Orange

Lastly, we chose the Rwar! T-shirt and matched it with Straight Cut Pants in Orange. These were my clear favourites! I wish there were adult sizes because all of us loved it so much! Every time I see this t-shirt, I feel like singing and head bob to this song.

The Website

Navigation around the website cannot be any easier and the preview images are big enough for folks with ‘old flower eyes’ like me to see quite clearly. The only difficulty you may face while shopping on the site is which one to buy. Haha!

The sizes usually range from 1 to 8 years depending on the design and style. You just have to click on the individual thumbnails for more information on the selected styles.

Remember to check their New Arrivals page! Aiyoh the new dresses are really very cute! Perfect for Chinese New Year yet not too ang kong kong (overwhelmingly, blindlingly red) hor?

The Kid

You would think having 5 years of working experience with kids for in-house fashion shoots (I used to work for a kids’ apparel brand 5 years ago) and having a child of my own, I shouldn’t have any trouble taking control of them on set. *snigger* Please lor. Telling the kid to stay in one spot and pose nicely like giving them a huge bowl of their favourite candy and then tell them “Don’t Touch”. Impossible. These superstars will test your patience  especially when you tell them you are on a deadline/hungry/need to pee. Mine was no exception. He just wanted to kungfu fight the leaves in the background and dig his nose. *facepalm*

Other than the 200 standard blurred shots, these are some other photos that didn’t meet Mummy’s standard but cute enough to want to keep. Dunno where he learnt the pouty pose but seems like it’s going to be a regular thing.

Let’s play… Kinetic Sand! (Review + Giveaway + Promo)

Product Review

You must have seen this video floating around the internet quite a lot last year. The Husband and I were so amazed with it but wondered if it will ever be available in Singapore. This has to be the coolest toy we have seen. Like EVER!

You know what? IT IS AVAILABLE IN SINGAPORE NOW! Pardon my excitement but yeah, I’m excited!! The Kinetic Sand is available in Singapore through the good folks of Pupsik Studio who also specializes in awesome baby and parenting products.

image

Pupsik Studio was very kind to provide us with the 1kg pack to review and we (namely Mummy and Daddy) couldn’t wait to rip off the packaging to play with the cool sand. Yes, Mummy and Daddy were way more excited than our child. Hahaha!

According to Pupsik Studio’s website,

“Sand play stimulates and develops children’s fine motor and creative playing skills. Kinetic Sand is the perfect material for open-ended, non-directed play. It leaves no sand or residue on your hands and is great for sensory therapy. Kinetic Sand is also great for kids with allergies – it is wheat, gluten and casein free and 100% safe and non-toxic.”

According to Mother of Xander,

If your kid loves the beach and you hate the sun, this might be a good compromise. He gets to play his sand, you get to lounge around in cool air-condition comfort in your house and with minimum cleanup afterwards. Win-win situation!

image

At first glance, the Kinetic Sand looks like any regular fine grained sand you might find on the beach or in stores. Even though clean-up is relatively easy, the sand can still get everywhere if your kiddo is the fidgety or active sort. We found a bit of sand in his hair, on the floor and under his feet but nothing a quick vacuum couldn’t solve.

Xander loves to play at the beach and with sand. but we haven’t been able to hang out at the beach very much last year because… I don’t know why actually. We just never got round to it for some reason. When I showed him the box, he thought “Oh how nice, sand in a box! Gimmegimmegimme! Open now!” We then showed him what the Kinetic Sand could REALLY do and that got Xander even more excited. He wasted no time and immediately attacked the sand completely ignoring us for a good hour and a half. I need to mention that Xander has sensitive skin and whenever he plays with regular play-dough or sand, he will always end up with some rashes somewhere on his face or hands. I am pleased to say he had none of those at the end of the day. Phew! If your little tike accidentally gets some in their eyes or even swallowed some, don’t panic. Just grab water to flush their eyes or drink some water. Easy peasy!

Naturally, Daddy got into the action with the little one and made some masterpieces of his own as well.

My verdict of Kinetic Sand is an honest and completely unbias BUY IT! Not only was it great for my 5 year old, even my 30 something year old was thoroughly entertained by it.

Let’s play… Bubber Smart Shapes Set! (Review + Giveaway + Promo)

Product Review (Updated on 13 Jan 2014)

Bubber looks similar to any regular play dough you might come across in the market because it’s colourful, it’s soft and mouldable. That’s where the similarity ends.

  1. Bubber is allergen free because it is wheat, gluten and casein free and 100% safe and non-toxic. It is also smell free! This is perfect for Xander who has sensitive skin and nose like his mummy and daddy. For once, he was not a mucus-y mess while playing with something. A definate nice change for all of us!
  2. It never dries up! Say wot? I don’t know what funny technology is in this thing but it really doesn’t dry up! We pulled it apart into many small pieces and had it scattered all over the table in an air-condition room for more than an hour. The Husband said there was a bit of shrinkage but definately not dry.
  3. Bubber is great for sensory play which is great for young children.
  4. Bubber is the world’s lightest moulding compound. I was stunned when I picked it up, it weighs virtually nothing. Why ah? I also dunno. This funny technology the Swedish engineers came up with is so weird but so wonderful!
  5. The texture was very smooth, dry and leaves no residue. When you tear it up, it breaks into tiny particles which will get blown away just by a sneeze. But when you slice it with the Bubber knife or the cutters provided, you get clean, sharp edges that are not possible with regular play dough. You can also pick up the individual cut pieces and stack them up without them sticking to each other. How cool is that?
  6. The most unusual use for the Bubber that I discovered on the Internet is that you can use it to make moulds for plaster casts! This I’ve got to try!

Why choose Bubber instead of play dough?

You are free to choose play dough or even go make your own of course. I dread pulling out his play dough sets because they always leave a huge sticky mess everywhere after he is done with them. Experienced parents will agree with me it is especially annoying when the kid accidentally drop bits of it on the floor, gets some stuck under his feet and starts walking around leaving colourful flattened bits all over the house. And the smell! Oh the smell! *gags* Also, if you want to save money and buy cheap play dough, those always somehow end up super soft and gooey after a few plays. Xan is allergic to most play dough and I always know whenever Xan had played with any in school because he would come home with rashes in between his fingers and on his face. I don’t enjoy slathering him with medicated cream every time it happens so I rarely let him play with it at home. Ya, he was a bit deprived when he was younger.

I think the biggest draw for daddy was that cleanup was super duper easy! Just smoosh the whole thing together with your hands, put it in an air tight container (Bubber doesn’t contain moisture so it will not dry out for months but an air tight container can help to keep dust  and dirt away) and you’re done! No need to bring the play table to the bathroom and scrub off the colourful paste, no more stepping onto rock hard, dried up play dough in the middle of the night and wake your family with loud expletives, NO MORE! I no bluff you! It’s true!

Bubber Smart Shapes Set comes with:

  1. 4 packs of Bubber in Red, White, Blue and Green
  2. 9 Smart Shapes geometric molds
  3. 1 Bubber Knife
  4. A guide with 15 templates with 3 different levels of difficulty.

I thought the templates were useful for parents like me who is most of the time “sibeh boh idea” (trans. very no idea). He was able to figure out the shapes required and position them according to the templates. He even directed daddy to “cut this, cut that, put here, put there”.

Sure it’s a bit on the costly side but the thought of not having to scrap off dried play dough from strange corners of the house, not having to scrub stained clothes (sometimes even their underwear) and no more digging out the irritating dough from under your child’s fingernails is just pure joy. I will replace all the play dough with Bubber when my #2 is born for sure.

A night of girlish fun plus 3 Style Essence Workshop Giveaway

When it comes to skincare and makeup, it’s all Cantonese to me. Meaning I know enough to get by but not motivated enough to want to learn more. My makeup style hasn’t changed very much over the years except now I draw my eyebrows. Ya, up until I was about 21, I walked around with almost non existent, au naturel eyebrows and thought I looked okay. Don’t ask me why I never thought of drawing my eyebrows because I also dunno. Dunno never mind leh. Whenever I saw pictures of myself I always wondered why my face always looked so sparse, like something was missing. Stupid right? I also wonder why none of my ex boyfriends ever pointed it out to me. Sigh. So anyway. Here are what I use on a typical day.

My makeup tools are:
1. “Foundation” $2 Daiso concealer
2. Eyebrows and eyeshadow – In2it eyebrow/eyeshadow. Most likely expired for years.
3. Eyeliner – Maybelline Masterliner
4. Tweezers for the eyebrows

When I want to feel fancy, I have a Maybelline Volum Express mascara which I had bought maybeeeeee 2 years ago, last used 2 years ago. A good friend of mine shared a tip with me. she said on days when she felt too lazy to put on makeup, she would at least crimp her lashes because it helps to ‘open’ her eyes and it makes her look a little more alert. It’s true you know, I used to do it but I don’t even remember where I threw my eyelash curlers anymore.

My bare essentials

Inside my makeup pouch, I have other very random things. I don’t remember why the blue Zebra permanent marker is in there but it’s certainly not for makeup.

I don’t know why I have 2 tweezers. They are just THERE.

And then this is my “daily skin care routine”.

Skincare tools:
1. Facial wash – Shokubutsu facial wash
2. Makeup remover/moisturizer – Johnson and Johnson’s baby oil

So you see, I am pretty low maintenance. That’s a really nice way of saying I’m a lazy girl. I just want my face clean fast and cheap. I’m hopeless and I need help. That is until I attended Style Essence’s self makeover workshop recently.

Singapore Mom Bloggers (SMB) which I am a member of, is celebrating our 1st birthday this year and part of the celebration included the exclusive, “just for SMB members only”, self makeup and styling workshop conducted by Style Essence. The vivacious Florinda (also a member of SMB) shared very useful tips on colour analysis, styling, makeup and skincare . Yeah!

Florinda sharing beauty tips to the class

She used the color wheel to illustrated how colors can compliment each other and with that in mind, we can use this theory when we shop for clothes and accessories that best suit our skin tones.

Colour Wheel

Florinda then did a very simple demonstration to find out which skin tone each of us belongs to with the help of a black and brown scarves. What do you think? Am I a Cool (black scarf) tone or Warm (brown scarf) tone?

The Lao Hiao in action again.

As it turns out, I’m a Pear Shape not a Building Shape that I always thought I was. Phew! To draw attention away from my magnificent child bearing hips, Florinda suggested putting more emphasis around the neck and shoulder area. A nice shawl or necklace should do the trick but I think adding a few cup sizes won’t hurt either, yah? *wink wink*

We were all given a guide, based on our body shape, of what styles will suit us best.  This is especially handy for me who don’t really like to go shopping because I never know what looks good on me.

Body shape

After the body and colour analysis, we started the skincare routine using Mary Kay’s Botanical Effects Skin Care range. We were told we shouldn’t smoosh our faces around like how we would when we wash our car. You should always dab the cleanser on your face first then use your 3rd and 4th fingers to rub (gently) in circular motions. Less friction creates less wrinkles lah.

Once we were done washing our faces, we applied the Botanical Mask on half of our faces. It deep cleans with very little effort and almost immediately after washing it off, I could see the difference between the 2 sides of my face. The pampered side really did feel and look fresher. Whee!

So hard to just stop applying the mask halfway.

See my non existent eyebrows? No? There, I told you it’s non existent already mah.

Now that our faces were clean, it’s time for makeup! Florinda and Bernadette had prepared a wide range of colours, lipsticks and brushes of all shapes and sizes for us to experiment. For someone who only use brown, seeing so many colours on 1 plate was a little unnerving for me. Since we were all there to learn something new and do something different for a change, I went straight for the purple eye shadow. *shudder*

Loads of makeup at our disposal. Yay!

Here’s how I looked before and after. Never mind that I look bloated, I have colour on my face! Not so Auntie anymore hor? *giggle*

Advertorial

As you probably know by now, my dear husband aka The Blogfather scammed persuaded Pamela of My First Games to hand over the coloured blocks instead of the plain coloured ones to him as a token of appreciation for him sweating all over her nice clean floor while fixing up the table she so kindly bought from us some time last year. I won’t repeat the story, I’m not Channel 5. OOPS! You can read his account here.

I’ve reviewed some of her other board games last year and they were Pengoloo, Spot it!, Soccer Dinosaurs! and my personal favourite Viva Topo! They are all fun but CitiBlocs is definately the most versatile of them all.

Xan (just turned 4yo) has been a big fan of the regular wooden blocks (you know, the ones with cylindrical, semicircle and rectangular shapes?) the minute he laid his eyes on my nephew’s set during one of our visits to my mum’s place. Over the last 2 years, his wooden block collection kept growing because we bought some and a friend gave us her son’s set since her boy was getting too big for them. He can spend quite a long time playing with blocks while I slip away to do some housework. Since then, he has built towers, buildings, boats, spaceships and also ramps for stunt cars. The run of the mill assortment of blocks served him quite well until now.

Ok, so the colours are really pretty. Reallllly pretty! Xan initially wasn’t sure what to do with them because they were all the same size and same shape. Very different from the usual blocks he plays with that came in all sort of shapes. Based on the instruction manual that came with the boxes, there are so many different things you can build. You can build lobsters, houses, trucks and even a coliseum depending on how many blocks you have. Check out the CitiBloc master videos here.

Not that I have no faith in Xan, I thought it would be easier to introduce the blocks to him by building really simple shapes. Wah lau the boy gave me a really sian look after I very enthusiastically show him my 6 block master piece. *heart crumbles* Luckily he saved my heart from shattering into more pieces with a hug and a “But I still love you anyway”. Mummy scrambles to the manual to look for the most cheem (difficult/complex) pattern possible with 100pcs.

A few weeks later, we were invited to a friend’s house for a New Year countdown party and we thought if the other kids don’t turn up, Xan was going to reach for the iPad or our phones for sure. Since we just received the CitiBlocs, why not bring it along. Clever right? I know man.

Stolen from a friend’s Facebook album

After the noms, Daddy emptied the 2 boxes of CitiBlocs for Xan and half expecting to spend the entire time guiding him. This time, he went straight for the manual to look for inspiration instead of waiting for us to come up with something for him to follow. When he wasn’t sure, he would hollered for Daddy and Mummy to come to his rescue.

He decided our structures were boring so he went ahead and did his version of a tower. So easy! While he was creating and improving his architectural masterpieces, I was able to continue my gossip session without having to help him every 2 minutes. Good for me leh!

Eh, I say so much also no use. You got to try it to believe it. I no bluff you one.

Well, it just so happens, My First Games (the exclusive distributor of CitiBlocs in Singapore) would like to give ONE lucky YOU a box of 100pc CitiBlocs (RP S$49.90). Why, you ask. Why not, we say.
